Currency |
The kyat (pronounced like yacht with 'ch' at the beginning) is the currency of the people. The FEC (Foreign Exchange Currency) is a means of fleecing tourists. You are required, at the airport - upon arrival, to exchange US$200 into 200 FEC (minus a $2 service charge). Theoretically they have the same value. When, however, you go to exchange US$ into kyats you get a drastically different exchange rate. The best we saw for US$ was 490 kyats to US$1. The same fellow was only willing to give 380 kyats to 1 FEC. There is also an example of a 1 kyat note from before they changed the name of the country from Burma to Myanmar. |
